How to report AI search visibility to clients without overpromising

How to report AI search visibility to clients: what to measure, what to put in the monthly report, and what not to claim.

The question every client is asking

Sooner or later a client forwards a screenshot: they asked ChatGPT for the best provider in their category, and a competitor came up instead of them. From then on, "are we in AI search?" is part of the account review whether you planned for it or not.

Agencies that answer with real numbers keep the conversation. Agencies that answer with "AI is a black box" end up competing with a specialist the client found on LinkedIn.

Measure the questions buyers ask, not the brand name

Asking an AI engine "what is <client>?" tells you very little. Buyers don't ask that. They ask category questions: "best payroll software for a 50-person company", "top SEO agencies in Austin", "alternatives to <competitor>".

Build a fixed set of 10–30 of those questions with the client, check them on the same schedule every week across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI answers, and record two things for each answer:

  • Mentioned: was the client named at all?
  • Cited: did the answer link to the client's website as a source?

What goes in the monthly report

Keep the AI section to one page. Clients skim it next to the SEO numbers, so it should read the same way:

  • One visibility score with the change since last month, the same way you'd show organic clicks.
  • Share of voice: how often the client is named compared with three to five named competitors.
  • The questions they won and lost this month, with the AI's wording quoted.
  • The sources AI used for those answers, so the client sees why a competitor was picked.
  • What you did about it and what's next: content shipped, fixes made, pages you're targeting.

What not to promise

AI answers vary from one run to the next, and models change without notice. Don't promise a position, a guaranteed mention, or a result by a date. Promise a process: weekly measurement, a monthly report, and a clear list of the work that moves the number.

Report trends over at least four weekly checks before calling a win or a loss. A single good answer is noise. Three months of a rising share of voice is a result you can put in a case study.

Tie it back to revenue

Ask the client to add an "AI assistant (ChatGPT, Claude…)" option to the "How did you hear about us?" field on their forms, and filter analytics for sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai and gemini.google.com. Those two numbers turn a visibility chart into a pipeline conversation.

Track AI and Google visibility in one place

See whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude recommend your clients, and share it in a white-label report.
