What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A plain-English guide
What is answer engine optimization? AEO is getting your brand named in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers. Here's how it works and how it differs from SEO.
The shift: from ten blue links to one answer
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), also called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), is the work of getting your brand named and cited in answers from AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews.
On Google, ranking 7th still got you a click now and then. In an AI answer there is usually a shortlist of three to five names. If you're not on it, the buyer never hears of you — and you never see the lost lead in your analytics.
Why you might be losing sales without knowing it
If inbound leads have slowed while your Google rankings look fine, AI answers are a likely gap. Common signs:
- Prospects say they "asked ChatGPT" and arrive with a list of your competitors.
- Branded search is flat even though the market is growing.
- Competitors with weaker websites keep getting mentioned in AI answers.
How AEO differs from SEO
SEO is about one page ranking for one query. AEO is about the model's overall picture of your brand: who mentions you, how consistently you're described, and whether the pages AI reads to answer a question include you.
Most of what wins AEO happens off your website — on listicles, review sites, directories and communities that AI engines search and trust. Your own site still matters: AI must be able to crawl it and understand in one sentence what you do.
The AEO loop
This is the loop to run every week (Namd automates the tracking and diagnosis):
- Track: ask AI the questions your buyers ask and record who gets recommended.
- Diagnose: see which sources AI used and where you're missing.
- Fix: publish answer-first pages, fix crawl and schema issues, and earn mentions on the sources AI reads.
- Measure: re-check weekly and watch mentions and citations climb.
