How to move keywords from page two to page one of Google

How to rank higher on Google by pushing striking-distance keywords onto page one, and why that also gets you into AI Overviews.

Start with striking distance

Keywords ranking 4–20 are the cheapest wins: Google already considers your page relevant. Moving from #12 to #5 can multiply clicks several times over; moving from #60 to #40 changes nothing.

Improve the ranking page

For each keyword, work on the page that already ranks, not a new one:

  • Put the keyword in the title tag and H1, phrased the way people search.
  • Answer the query in the first paragraph, then cover the sub-questions the top 3 results cover.
  • Add internal links to the page from your strongest pages, using the keyword in the anchor text.
  • Refresh facts, examples and the visible "last updated" date.
  • Earn two or three links from relevant sites (partners, guest posts, roundups).

Getting cited in AI Overviews

AI Overviews quote pages that already rank well and give a clear, self-contained answer. Look at the sources Google cites for your keyword: match their format (definition, steps, comparison table) and add something they lack — original data, a worked example or expert input.

Use short paragraphs under question-style H2s, add FAQPage or HowTo schema where it fits, and make sure the page is fast and indexable.
