How to get cited in Google AI Overviews

How to get cited in AI Overviews: rank on page one, answer the question in the first lines, and cover the follow-up questions. Step by step.

How AI Overviews choose their sources

To get cited in Google AI Overviews, a page first has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet in normal search, and in practice it usually ranks well for the question or for closely related questions. Google's AI writes the overview from pages in its index and links the ones it drew from.

Google says there's no special markup or file needed for AI Overviews; good SEO is the entry ticket. What sets the cited pages apart is that they answer the question directly and are easy to quote.

Step 1: Find the keywords that show an AI Overview

Not every search shows an AI Overview. In Namd, open Google → Rankings: each tracked keyword shows whether an AI Overview appears and whether it cites the client's site. Start with keywords that show one but don't cite you yet.

Step 2: Get the page onto page one

Pages ranking in the top 10 are far more likely to be cited. If the page sits on page two, improve it first: see the guide on moving keywords from page two to page one.

Step 3: Answer the question in the first lines

Put a direct, self-contained answer of 40–60 words right under the heading that matches the question. Name the thing, give the answer, add one specific detail like a number, price range or timeframe. Then go into depth below.

Step 4: Cover the follow-up questions

AI Overviews often combine several related questions into one answer. Add a short section for each follow-up a buyer would ask (cost, how long it takes, alternatives, who it's for), each with its own clear heading. Lists and simple tables help.

Step 5: Make the page easy to trust and to quote

  • Show who wrote it and when it was last updated.
  • Use specific facts and cite sources where you make claims.
  • Don't block snippets: avoid nosnippet and max-snippet:0 on pages you want quoted.
  • Keep the page fast on mobile and readable without JavaScript.

Measure it

AI Overviews change often, so check weekly rather than once. Namd re-checks every tracked keyword and shows, month by month, how many AI Overviews cite the client, which is a number worth putting in the client report.
